How to use the tip calculator

The tool handles the three things you actually want to know after a meal: how much to tip, what the total comes to, and — if you're splitting the bill — how much each person owes. Results update as you type, so you can nudge the percentage a point or two and see the split adjust.

  1. Enter the bill amount (the subtotal, pre-tip).
  2. Tap a preset tip percentage — 15, 18, 20, 25 — or type a custom percent into the custom field. The presets bias toward US dining norms; outside the US your local convention may differ.
  3. Set the split. Use the − and + buttons to change the number of people sharing the bill. When the split is 1, the per-person row is hidden.
  4. Read the result: tip amount, total bill, and the per-person tip and per-person total when split is more than one.

Tax and tip

In the US it's conventional to tip on the pre-tax subtotal, not on the tax-inclusive total. Most bills show both lines separately; enter the pre-tax subtotal for the most accurate calculation. Tipping on the post-tax total isn't wrong — it just tips slightly more generously.

Tipping norms vary

The 18–20% standard is a US convention for sit-down dining with table service. Counter service, coffee shops, and takeout have their own — often lower — conventions. In much of Europe, Japan, and Australia, service is bundled into the menu price and tipping is either optional or a small rounding-up gesture. Check local convention rather than defaulting to the US preset.
